Not So Electric

I spent the weekend playing Infamous, and while it's an enjoyable game and certainly fairly well done, there is just something about it that bugs me, it feels like it's missing something. For the most part it's a decent game, otherwise I certainly wouldn't have played it as much as I have. Though it suffers from so many thing that games in this genre do, and everything I seem to have read overlooks these faults and just label it an awesome game. Things like repetitive missions, I'm well aware that you can only create so many unique missions in a game, but having them repeat over in a new area doesn't make me want to do more side missions. Also it almost feels pointless to do side missions in this game, you gain a small amount of experience points and that's it, some add to your karma, but not much it seems. The karma system also feels like an excuse just to add replay value, it really doesn't offer anything.

Also why is it that enemies can hit me from a mile away, plinking away at me from some rooftop when I can just about see them. I'd bitch about the fact that enemies get stronger later in and there are more of them, while you don't gain anything but it's probably part of that "challenge". You can upgrade your powers but it just doesn't feel like it makes much difference. You never feel overly powerful, which is a shame because that is essentially what you are supposed to be.

The main story missions are actually the most interesting part obviously, granting you new powers when you complete certain parts. Though I did feel it takes a while for this game to get interesting, it's a tad underwhelming until you unlock some of the more interesting abilities.

The world of Infamous is a strange one, it has an empty feeling to it, it doesn't feel alive even with all the people milling around. It's just row after row of buildings, it just feels lifeless.

I've very interested to see how this game compares to Prototype now, since they are quite similar. I don't want it to seem like I dislike Infamous, I just feel like I'm missing something, then again maybe it's just another case of expecting more from a game that has been so hyped up.
