Battle Fantasia

I'd been wondering why a game like Battle Fantasia from Arc Systems hadn't really caught my attention till I saw it on their website, nor had I seen much press regarding it, now I know why.

The problem is that it's not a bad game per say, it's more that it lacks any real substance. It's an arcade port, with added modes such as a story mode. For some reason, I had likened this story mode to being something deep and meaningful. As it stands, it's pretty much arcade mode with a shit load of words. I'm not sure where I got the idea from that it might have some deeper elements too it, maybe because the game gives off an RPGish vibe.

If you've not seen the game, its a 2.5D fighter, similar to the new SF4. It uses a 2D fighting system with a sort of cel shaded effect on characters, giving them more dimension. It does indeed look very polished, specials and super moves are all very flashy and impressive and the overall effects are very Guilty Gear in feeling. For some reason the game tends to remind me of Power Stone in terms of presentation, not really sure why.

The overall style of the feeling isn't too bad, it does feel more like Guilty Gear than anything else. Some of the characters fighting styles seem a bit clunky and all in all are a bit too similar. Which leads to the problem, as a fighting game you should want to go back to it, play through the individual story modes or the arcade mode again, but it doesn't give you that feeling.  It is very much an arcade game where you might play for 15-20mins at a time or have a few games in 2P mode which is where it would probably shine, especially when pulling off some of the more satisfying super moves.
